It feels weird to say that I've already been here for three weeks. It doesn't feel like that long, but at the same time, so much has happened already.
While being here, we have been helping out with a Tamil church in Tokyo. We have been able to help with the church services, street evangelism, children's ministry, and we have also been going to a nursing home to reach people who need it urgently.
Our days have started to fall into somewhat of a routine. In the mornings we worship together as a group, apart from the church. After that we focus on schoolwork until lunch. It has been nice for me as it serves as alone time from the rest of my group. In the afternoon we will usually go out for street evangelism, except on certain days when we have other things planned.
On Tuesdays we go to a nursing home where we sing and spend time with the people there. I think it's cool that ministry doesn't always have to look like preaching to a large group of people. Sometimes it looks like sitting with someone, talking to them, singing for them, or solely spending time with them.
On Fridays we usually do children's ministry or sports evangelism. Sports evangelism is essentially where we use sports as a way to connect with people first, and then hopefully have opportunities to share the Gospel with them. I really like this idea because it gives us a natural way to meet people instead of immediately approaching them with the purpose of evangelizing.
Mondays and Wednesdays have been more of our adventure days or Sabbaths. These are days where we can go explore Tokyo, experience more of Japan, or just spend time resting and regenerating. I think having these days has been really important because it gives us time to actually enjoy where we are as well as gives us a chance to rest from the more ministry-focused days.
I think one of the biggest things for me so far has just been getting used to being here. Everything is different, and there are so many things that I don't even realize I'm having to adjust to until I'm in the middle of it. Even as I've travelled for missions before, being here has been a different experience.
I'm still learning what it looks like to live here, to do ministry here, and to connect with people from a culture that is different from my own. I'm sure there is still a lot that I haven't even begun to learn yet.
But this is where I am three weeks in. I'm excited to see what the rest of this Journey looks like and what God is going to teach me through it.
